Carneades
Carneades, Member of the philosopher legation. Licence

In 155/156 BC Athens sent the legendary philosopher legation to Rome to negotiate an imposed fine. This involved:

  • The stoic philosopher Diogenes of Babylon
  • The peripatetician Kritolaos of Phaselis
  • The academician Carneades

On the speeches of Diogenes in Rome the doctrine of the Stoics was exported from Athens to Rome.
